Welcome to our Weekly Newsletter

We are officially open! Young leaders hosted a sports festival for our youngest classes and invited local Councillors, staff from Speller Metcalfe and McBains, the DfE and Local Authority to join us to officially open our sports hall. Dafydd Lawday, CEO of the MET also came to see us in action and was blown away with the skills, leadership and team work on display - CREATE in action!

Happy Half Term!

Just like that, another half term has flown by! This one has felt really special as we have finally taken possession of the sports hall, there is still some finishing off to do, but we are open for business! Seeing our Y11s in there doing their exams this last couple of weeks has felt really special, and classes have been starting to use it too - all more evidence towards our School Games Mark. The big news is that after five years of Gold standard, we have successfully been awarded Platinum status. A huge well done from me to the whole school community but especially to our PE and Sports Lead, Mr Reed who has spearheaded all our work on this important area.

We also had our Y11 Leavers' Assembly, or as I like to call it 'no mascara day' as I cry all morning! It really is a highlight of the year as we wave off our Y11 cohort and reflect on all the amazing memories we have made over the years. Some of these 16 year olds have been with us for 10 years, and we have the embarrassing photos to prove it - well done Y11s you have made all the staff incredibly proud.

PE News: Sports Mark PLATINUM

Following a 5th successive year of gold standard in the national school games mark awards we have been successful in our application to upgrade to Platinum

The school games mark recognises a schools engagement in the school games programme and the commitment shown to physical education and sport at the school. The school enters a number of different school games events including the summer school games, dodgeball and athletics competitions as well as targeted sessions in alternative activities such as climbing, martial arts and skating just to name a few.

We are externally proud of our platinum status that is currently held by less than 20% of schools across the county. The opportunities and experiences within sport and physical activity our pupils have play a significant part in promoting and maintaining both physical and mental health and wellbeing. A huge thank you to Stride Active for the fantastic programme they provide for schools locally and to some of the key stakeholders we work with including Halo Leisure, Whitecross Tennis Club, South Wye Boxing, Matt Hudd Martial Arts & Hereford FC in the Community.

Out and About: Y9

Class 9M have been enjoying their sessions at Growing Local this term. They have been learning about planting; what plants work together well - it was really lovely to see the "Pizza Garden" coming alive with all plants that can be used in making pizzas - we even gave them a cow to finish the garden off!. They have been cooking with the produce already in the garden over the term and this week they were the first to use the pizza oven to make their own pizzas.

PE news: Primary Athletics

It's been great to get some use of the sports hall this week. Pupils have enjoyed continuing athletics lessons despite the weather!

PSHE News

Last week was mental health awareness week.

All classes were given opportunities to think about their own well-being and the wellbeing of others and identify feelings and strategies to help their wellbeing.

Year 8 drew gingerbread people on flip charts and labelled physical reactions to feeling mentally unwell, the class were brilliant at demonstrating their emotional literacy and understanding that our bodies send us signal when our mind is feeling unwell. Year 9 produced some fantastic work around their self-care tool kit! They all had some great ideas about how to keep themselves mentally healthy.

Incredibles spent the morning focusing on and finding things that can help them feel calm and relaxed, they listened to calming music, completed puzzles and colouring in, as well as reading stories and creating their 'calm island' - exceptional work from Incredibles class.

In other PSHE news, year 10 have been looking at misinformation as part of PSHE and citizenship. They discussed what misinformation meant to them and how it can be used to influence the public when they are choosing who to vote for. The class showed some good critical thinking and analysis in that lesson, well done year 10.
